Why are the Grey Shirts (Cityrail Police) standing outside the ticket gates to check people's tickets after they have passed through the gates ?

im not familiar with sydney's system, but off-hand i can think of one reason already. maybe cos they want to check people who successfully exploit the system without valid tickets. if u couldn't even get thru the gates then there's no pt checking, even if they found someone without a ticket.
of course im assuming sydney's system is electronic/automatic in making the above statement.
Quest... they asked me for my ticket...but as I only got a one-way ticket.. i didn't have one.. and he saw the ticket machine eat my ticket !! iiddiootts....
but the machine eats ur ticket anyway ~~~ :(
